SDUW Delegation Visits Partner Universities in Australia

A delegation led by Prof. Xia Lidong, Vice President of Shandong University, Weihai (SDUW), visited Swinburne University of Technology (SUT) and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) from December 10th to 13th. Staff from School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Mechanical, Electrical and Information Engineering and International Office, as well as representatives of local enterprises in Weihai accompanied Prof. Xia on his visit.

At SUT, the delegation was warmly welcomed by Prof. Aleks Subic, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of SUT, and Pro Vice-Chancellors for Research and development, Graduate Affairs and Department of Science. Prof. Xia introduced the recent progress achieved at the Joint Research Centre for Advanced Manufacturing (hereafter as the Center). He pointed out that the Center, as one of the most important tasks of SDUW in promoting the development of Weihai against the background of transformation from old economic driving engines to new ones, stands for the fruitful results achieved through close cooperation between SDUW and SUT, and SDUW will continue to support the construction and development of the Center. He expressed his wish that the two universities could make greater contribution to the cultivation of high-level talents with ongoing cooperation.

Prof. Aleks Subic said that with the establishment of the Center, the cooperation between the two parties covered not only students and faculty exchange, but also the communication and collaboration with local enterprises in Weihai. He also extended his wish that more substantial results would be achieved with the joint effort of the two universities. During the meeting, the two parties also held discussions with regard to the details of construction of the Center. During the stay, the delegation visited the Factory of the Future, Smart Structure Laboratory and Center for Micro Photonics, etc.

At RMIT, the delegation was received by Mrs. Tracy Harris, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tom Steiner, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching), staff from the School of Engineering the International Office of RMIT. Prof. Xia said that the two universities have maintained a long-term partnership and have made great achievements in joint education program. He expressed his wish that the two parties could further cooperation to cultivate international talents by providing them with abundant education resources. Prof. Xia also extended his thankfulness towards RMIT for the care and support that has been given to SDUW students.

Mrs. Tracy Harris pointed out that RMIT has been attaching great importance to the cooperation with SDUW. She said that RMIT is more than happy to accept students from SDUW and hoped that the two universities could conduct in-depth cooperation in terms of faculty exchange and joint research. The 5th Joint Management Committee meeting for MoE program in Mechanical Engineering was held during the visit. The attendees discussed and settled down details regarding student recruitment, course introduction, staff exchange as well as research collaboration, etc.

During the stay, the delegation attended the 2019 RMIT Graduation Ceremony, at which nine students attending the SDUW-RMIT MoE program graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Prof. Xia awarded these students with SDU Graduation Certificate, and encouraged them to make greater achievements with unremitting efforts.
